Penne rigate is an Italian pasta with a tubular, ridged shape, cut at an angle to resemble a quill pen. Its name comes from the Italian penna , meaning "feather" or "nib." Originating in the Campania region of southern Italy, this pasta became popular in the 19th century thanks to the invention of a machine that allowed it to be cut diagonally without flattening it.
The ridges on its surface allow sauces to adhere better, making it ideal for accompanying thick sauces such as arrabbiata, amatriciana, or norma. Its versatility also makes it an excellent choice for pasta salads or baked dishes.
